Following every fire, mushrooms follow. In the summer following the 2017 fire, mushroom pickers and buyers flooded the area in the hundreds. We had 20-30 stay with us on their way to the picking areas.
That was last summer. This year far fewer have stayed with us.
I understand that the various types of morels that pop up after fires are highly desirable in other countries. A determined person can make good money picking mushrooms. Since you’re following a fire in often rugged county it must be a hard job. Buyers follow the pickers and pay cash. The mushrooms are shipped overseas to restaurants and markets almost immediately.
